It’s no secret I’m a massive fan of facial oils and serums so when I discovered that there was a new one on the scene obviously I had to investigate further! Vanderohe is a new skincare brand and their exquisite serum is the first product in the range. The serum contains wonderful ingredients like rosehip oil, rose otto and neroli. The oils are either organic or harvested from the wild and I can guarentee you’ll fall in love with the scent. Olivia Thorpe is the founder, I caught up with her to find out a little more
Do you think people are becoming more aware about what they use on their skin?
Definitely. A few years ago no one would have thought twice about using, say, a fragranced face moisturiser. People have become more informed and more interested — they want to know what’s in a product and they want to know whether it’s safe or not, whether it’s a potential irritant or not.
How did you choose the scent of your facial serum?
I simply followed my nose. I had at the time (and still do have) an extremely strong sense of smell, triggered by pregnancy. I truly believe a very strong animal instinct led me to the precise formula of my product via the scent alone. I was suffering from extreme stress at the time on top of an array of what seemed to be auto-immune allergies that arose whilst I was living in Singapore. I feel like No.1 Nourishing Face Serum was the healing tonic I was so desperately in need of – for my skin but also for my mind.
What is your favourite way to relax?
A long bath.
How did you learn how to formulate your serum?
A lot of research! I’m a bit of a geek at heart so I greatly enjoy burying my head in books. Coming from a family of doctors I was particularly hungry for a firm scientific understanding of the various chemicals and their functions in plant oils and what happens when you blend different oils. I also sought help from the Aromatherapy Trade Council who were hugely helpful in holding my hand through the learning process.
You’re a mum too. Do you have any tips for mums who are thinking about starting up their own business?
Don’t give up and ask for help! There have been times when I’ve been so exhausted juggling everything (I have two kids and no help at home) that I came close to just packing it all in. But then I’d receive an amazing testimonial from a happy customer and I’d feel immediately better. But the best way to stop yourself becoming totally overwhelmed by everything is to just stop and ask for help.
Who inspires you the most?
My two sons.
Why did you decide to create a serum as your first product?
I didn’t set out to create a product. I created it for a friend and tried it myself because I loved the scent. It was then that I realised how effective the formula was! I’d worked in beauty journalism for 5+years and hadn’t come across any single product with such immediate and lasting results. When I gave samples out to people and started receiving feedback on how it had transformed people’s skin, I then decided I should try to sell it.
What’s next for Vanderohe?
I’ll soon be launching my Body Serum (March 2018) – a really exquisite body oil that has a really unique and rare scent.
